Highlights
Return trip on the Gornergrat Bahn cogwheel railway from Zermatt to Gornergrat in the class you book (usually 2nd class for standard tickets).
About this experience
Gornergrat is one of Switzerland's classic mountain viewpoints above Zermatt, reached by the Gornergrat Bahn — Europe's highest open-air cogwheel railway — climbing from the village up to around 3,089 m. From the top you see the Matterhorn lined up with 20+ other 4,000 m peaks and the Gorner Glacier, with an observatory, viewing terraces and the ZOOOM the Matterhorn multimedia exhibition making this an easy but spectacular high-Alpine excursion.
What's included
- Return trip on the Gornergrat Bahn cogwheel railway from Zermatt to Gornergrat in the class you book (usually 2nd class for standard tickets).
- Use of the open-air cogwheel trains with large windows and frequent photo opportunities as the line climbs more than 1,400 m in around 30—40 minutes each way.
- Access to the Gornergrat summit area, including the main outdoor viewing terraces with wide panoramas of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and the Gorner Glacier.
- Admission to the ZOOOM the Matterhorn interactive exhibition (included in many current Gornergrat tickets) with multimedia rooms that present the mountain scenery in different ways.
- Freedom to get off and back on the cogwheel train at intermediate stations such as Riffelalp, Riffelberg and Rotenboden on the same route, according to the validity of your ticket.
- NOT included: food and drinks at the summit restaurant or hotels, ski passes and piste access in winter, mountain-guide services, rental of hiking or ski equipment, or onward transport beyond Zermatt.
Who it's for
- Ideal for travellers who want big Matterhorn and glacier views without hiking long distances or dealing with technical mountain terrain.
- Great for couples, families and photography fans who enjoy scenic train rides, terrace viewpoints and light walks around mountain stations.
- Suitable for most reasonably fit adults and older children; you will be at just over 3,000 m where the air is thinner, but walking distances can be kept short.
- Less suitable if you struggle badly with heights, have serious heart or lung problems that make altitude difficult, or are looking for a very low-budget excursion.
What you'll do
- Walk from your accommodation in Zermatt to the Gornergrat Bahn station next to the main railway station, buy or scan your pre-booked ticket and check the departure board.
- Board the cogwheel train, find a seat by the window and watch as it leaves Zermatt, passing chalets, larch forest and ski slopes before breaking out into open Alpine scenery.
- Climb higher past intermediate stops like Riffelalp, Riffelberg and Rotenboden, with repeat views of the Matterhorn, Riffelsee and surrounding peaks as the train zigzags up the ridge.
- Arrive at Gornergrat summit station, walk up to the viewing terraces near the observatory and spend time taking photos of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and the Gorner Glacier basin below.
- Visit the ZOOOM the Matterhorn exhibition (if included in your ticket), explore short marked paths or viewpoints near the station and take a break in the mountain restaurant or café.
- When ready, board any suitable return train back down to Zermatt, optionally getting off at an intermediate station for a short walk or extra viewpoint if your ticket allows.
Before you go
- Tickets / price (starts from): official seasonal prices currently list a standard same-day return from Zermatt to Gornergrat at about 96 CHF per adult in winter (Nov—Apr) and around 132 CHF in summer (May—Oct), with 50% reductions for holders of Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card and similar passes. Children usually get 50% off, with some travelling free on junior cards or special offers.
- Duration: the cogwheel ride takes around 30—40 minutes each way; plan about 3—4 hours total for the full excursion including time on the summit terraces, ZOOOM exhibition, photos and a café stop.
- Operating times: the Gornergrat Bahn runs year-round, with multiple departures per hour in high season from early morning until late afternoon or after sunset; maintenance closures can affect some dates, so always check the current timetable.
- Altitude & weather: at over 3,000 m it can be cold and windy even in summer; bring warm layers, hat, gloves, sunglasses and sun protection. If you feel unwell from altitude (headache, dizziness, nausea), limit exertion and go back down.
- Ticket types & passes: point-to-point Gornergrat tickets, round trips and special offers (like afternoon discounts in winter) exist; many Swiss rail passes cover part of the fare with a supplement. Always confirm what your pass includes before buying.
Good to know
- Location: the Gornergrat Bahn departs directly from Zermatt, a car-free village reached by train from Visp/Brig; you simply change platforms in Zermatt for the mountain railway.
- Flexibility: you can hop on and off at intermediate stations to visit viewpoints, lakes or restaurants; just ensure you stay within the validity of your chosen ticket or route.
- Season differences: in winter the area is focused on skiing with snowy landscapes and pistes; in summer and autumn it's about hiking trails, wildflowers, rock and glacier views.
- Views vs weather: clear mornings usually give the most reliable visibility; on cloudy days you may be in fog at the top, so checking webcams before travel is smart if the views are your main reason to go.
- Photography tips: reflections at Riffelsee with the Matterhorn are a classic shot; for the best photos at the summit, use the open terraces and protect your camera batteries from cold conditions in winter.
