Summer Palace (Yiheyuan)

Beijing’s imperial lakeside retreat: the Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) is a huge Qing-dynasty garden wrapped around Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, about 20 km from the city centre. With pavilions, temples, covered walkways and island bridges, it’s basically a royal park plus small palace complex in one UNESCO-listed landscape. Plan 3—4 hours minimum; more if you walk full circuits or take a boat.

• Basic entrance ticket to the Summer Palace park area, covering the main grounds along Kunming Lake, Longevity Hill, the Long Corridor, bridges and standard public courtyards.
• Access to most open-air areas and many halls on the standard visitor routes; select “inside” scenic spots (like Suzhou Street, Garden of Virtue and Harmony and the Tower of Buddhist Incense) need separate small tickets or a combo “through ticket”.
• Use of general park paths, lakeside promenades and viewpoints during normal opening hours.

• All ages who can handle a lot of walking and some stairs and slopes.
• Great for first-time visitors who want a big “classic Chinese garden + lake + palace” experience in one hit.
• Not ideal if you hate crowds or walking distances — the site is ~2.9 km² and can get very busy in good weather and on holidays.

• Take the subway or taxi out to the Summer Palace (common metro stops: Beigongmen or Xiyuan), then walk to one of the main gates (East Palace Gate / North Palace Gate / New Palace Gate).
• Buy or scan your ticket and enter the park, usually starting near the formal palace buildings and the Long Corridor.
• Climb part of Longevity Hill for views over Kunming Lake, wander the lakeside paths and cross causeways or the Seventeen-Arch Bridge to Nanhu Island depending on your route.
• If you buy the add-on/through tickets, go inside premium scenic spots such as the Tower of Buddhist Incense area, Suzhou Street or the Garden of Virtue and Harmony.
• Optionally take a seasonal boat ride on Kunming Lake, then exit via a different gate and connect back to the metro or your driver.

• Tickets / price: in normal conditions, basic adult admission starts from about CNY 30; combo/“through” tickets that include several paid inner scenic spots are around CNY 60 in peak months. Kids under ~1.2 m or under 6 years and seniors 60+ often enter free or at big discounts with ID, while ages 6—18 usually get half-price concessions.
• Hours:
• Public park area: roughly 06:00—20:00 (high season, Apr 1—Oct 31) and 06:30—19:00 (low season, Nov 1—Mar 31), with last entry about 1 hour before closing.
• Paid inner scenic spots (like Dehe Garden, Wenchang Gallery, Buddhist Incense Tower, Suzhou Street): typically 08:00—18:00 in high season and 08:30—17:00 in low season, last entry about 30 minutes before closing, and some of these are closed on Mondays except public holidays.
• The park runs real-name ticketing via official channels; carry your passport/ID for both booking and entry checks.
• Expect airport-style security at the gate; drones and large tripods are restricted, and some indoor halls may limit or ban photography.

• Location: Haidian District, northwest Beijing, about 20 km from Tiananmen / central city; allow ~40—60 minutes each way depending on traffic and transport.
• Scale & layout: the Summer Palace covers over 300 hectares, around three-quarters of which is water (Kunming Lake), with Longevity Hill on the north shore and long lakeside walks, causeways and islands.
• Best timing: spring (Apr—May) and autumn (Sep—Oct) give the nicest temps; mornings or late afternoons are better than mid-day in summer. In winter parts of the lake may freeze and limited ice activities sometimes run.
• Extra spends: optional boat rides on Kunming Lake, additional tickets for inner scenic spots and any guided tours / audio guides are all on top of the base park ticket.

Budget from about CNY 30 for basic entry, ride the metro or taxi out, spend a few hours walking lakeside paths and palaces around Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, and add inner scenic spots or a boat ride if you want the “max royal garden” version.
