A'DAM Lookout (Observation Deck & Swing)

Highlights

Standard entrance ticket for A'DAM Lookout, giving access to the indoor observation deck and open-air sky deck at the top of the tower.

About this experience

A'DAM Lookout is the observation deck on top of the A'DAM Tower in Amsterdam North, about 100 metres above the IJ, with 360° views over the historic centre, harbour and polder landscape, plus Europe's highest swing "Over the Edge" and an interactive exhibition with a free audio tour about the city.

What's included

  • Standard entrance ticket for A'DAM Lookout, giving access to the indoor observation deck and open-air sky deck at the top of the tower.
  • Free audio tour and interactive exhibition about Amsterdam's history, culture and skyline, included with regular tickets.
  • Access to rooftop bars/restaurant areas where you can buy drinks and snacks while you enjoy the view.
  • Option to add paid extras like the Over the Edge swing or Amsterdam VR Ride as separate add-on tickets or combo products.
  • NOT included: Over the Edge swing and VR ride (unless you buy a combo ticket), food and drinks, canal cruises or other packages sold by third parties, or transport to and from the tower.

Who it's for

  • Ideal if you want a modern city-view experience over Amsterdam with a bit of adrenaline on top rather than a classical church tower climb.
  • Great for couples, friends and older families who enjoy skyline photos, sunset views and rooftop bars; the swing and VR ride are for thrill-seekers.
  • Suitable for most ages for the deck itself, but the swing and VR ride have minimum height and safety requirements; young children may not be allowed on the thrill rides.
  • Generally accessible inside the tower via lifts and level walkways; the rooftop and swing area involve some outdoor exposure and may feel intense if you dislike heights.

What you'll do

  • Take the free ferry from behind Amsterdam Centraal to Buiksloterweg and walk a couple of minutes to the A'DAM Tower entrance, or arrive from elsewhere in Amsterdam North.
  • Check in at the A'DAM Lookout reception, scan your ticket and ride the themed lift up to the observation deck, which opens directly into the viewing area.
  • Walk around the indoor and outdoor decks, using the free audio tour and information panels to identify landmarks across the city, harbour and countryside.
  • If you bought a swing ticket, head up to the Over the Edge area at your time slot and strap in for a short ride swinging out over the tower edge at 100 metres above the ground.
  • Grab a drink or snack at the bar, take photos from different angles and, if you booked it, try the Amsterdam VR Ride before heading back down in the lift and returning by ferry.

Before you go

  • Tickets / price (starts from): official pricing currently lists an adult entrance ticket at 18.50 EUR on site and 16.50 EUR online, with children (4—12) around 12.50 / 10.50 EUR and a separate swing add-on at 7.50 EUR. Treat 16.50 EUR as a realistic starting price for one adult Lookout ticket bought online, plus extra if you add the swing or VR ride.
  • Time & stay: your ticket gives access within opening hours, and you can generally stay on the deck as long as you like that day; swing and VR add-ons work with specific time slots.
  • Opening hours: standard posted hours are Monday—Thursday 11:00—19:00 (last entry 18:00) and Friday—Sunday 11:00—21:00 (last entry 20:00), with occasional special dates having different schedules — always check the current calendar for your chosen day.
  • Payment: on site, A'DAM Lookout is largely cashless, so plan to pay by card or mobile wallet for tickets, swing add-ons and bar purchases.
  • Safety & restrictions: the swing has a minimum height of about 1.20 m and may be unsuitable for people with certain health conditions or a strong fear of heights. In bad weather (high wind, storms, ice), the roof and swing can temporarily close for safety.

Good to know

  • Location: A'DAM Lookout is at IJpromenade 1—4, right next to the Eye Filmmuseum, directly across the IJ from Amsterdam Centraal Station.
  • Getting there: the main access is the free Buiksloterweg ferry from behind Centraal; crossings take a few minutes and run frequently all day. From the ferry, it is a very short walk to the tower.
  • Time needed: most visitors spend 1—2 hours between the lift ride, views, photos, bar time and, if they booked it, the swing and VR ride.
  • Best timing: clear days and sunset/evening slots give the most dramatic views; evenings on Fridays and weekends can be lively around the bar and DJ sets.
  • Combos & passes: various tickets bundle A'DAM Lookout with canal cruises, THIS IS HOLLAND or food/drink credits; some city cards include entry or discounts, but you still need a timed reservation.

Why this is worth it

Budget about 16.50 EUR per adult for the basic online ticket and set aside 1—2 hours for A'DAM Lookout — a 100-metre high observation deck above the IJ with 360° views, an included audio tour and the optional Over the Edge swing and VR ride if you want extra thrills.
