Kiyomizu-dera Temple

One of Kyoto’s most iconic temples, built on a hillside with a massive wooden stage jutting out over the valley and big views across the city. The name “Kiyomizu” (pure water) comes from the Otowa Waterfall below the hall. Plan around 1.5—2 hours; more if you wander the streets around the temple.

• Tickets/Entry: adult admission to the main hall/inner precinct is typically around ¥500; elementary and junior high students pay a reduced fee (around ¥200). Prices can change slightly for special night viewings or events, so always check current details.
• Hours: temple opens early, generally from 06:00; standard closing is around 18:00, with extended hours and special illumination nights on select spring and autumn dates (often open until about 21:30 with last entry around 21:00 on those nights).
