Free access to Varkala's main beach area and clifftop promenade, including public steps down from North Cliff to the sand.
About this experience
Varkala Beach in Kerala — often called Papanasam Beach — is a long golden sand strip backed by red laterite cliffs, with the Arabian Sea on one side and a line of cafés, homestays and small shops along the clifftop path. It's one of South India's most relaxed beach towns, known for sunsets, yoga stays, casual seafood shacks and a slightly boho backpacker vibe rather than big party clubs.
What's included
- Free access to Varkala's main beach area and clifftop promenade, including public steps down from North Cliff to the sand.
- The ability to swim or paddle in the sea when conditions and lifeguards allow, and to sit or walk along the shoreline for as long as you like.
- Informal use of the clifftop walking path lined with cafés, restaurants, guesthouses, shops and yoga studios, giving constant sea views.
- Plenty of spots to watch sunrise and especially sunset over the Arabian Sea from either the sand or the cliff edge viewpoints.
- NOT included: sunbed and umbrella rental, surfboard or bodyboard hire, café/restaurant food and drinks, yoga classes, Ayurvedic treatments, or transport to and from Varkala.
Who it's for
- Ideal for couples, solo travellers and small groups looking for a laid-back beach break with a mix of sea, cafés and yoga rather than noisy nightclubs.
- Great for budget and mid-range travellers who like homestays, small guesthouses and relaxed beach shacks instead of big resort compounds.
- Suitable for most ages and fitness levels; the only physically demanding part is the stairway between cliff and beach, which has several flights of steps.
- Less suitable if you want a highly developed, resort style beach with motorised water sports everywhere, or if you struggle with stairs and uneven paths.
What you'll do
- Arrive in Varkala town by train or road, then head towards North Cliff where most beachside accommodation, cafés and the main viewpoint stretch are located.
- Walk along the clifftop path, stopping at cafés, juice bars and shops that overlook the sea, and pick a spot to watch the waves and people below.
- Use one of the main stairways to descend from the cliff down to the beach, then spend time walking along the shoreline, sitting on the sand or swimming when lifeguards say conditions are safe.
- During the day, rent a sunbed and umbrella from local vendors if you want shade, grab fresh coconuts or snacks, or book a yoga class / massage session with one of the nearby studios and Ayurvedic centres.
- In the late afternoon, head back to the cliff edge or stay on the beach to watch the sun drop straight into the sea, then move into one of the many cafes or restaurants for a simple dinner with wave sounds in the background.
- On longer stays, mix beach time with short walks along the cliff in both directions, casual shopping, café hopping and relaxed early mornings or sunset sessions on the sand.
Before you go
- Tickets / price (starts from): there is no entry fee for Varkala Beach itself; realistically, budget from around 200—500 INR per person per day for small extras such as drinks, snacks and an occasional sunbed/umbrella rental, plus your accommodation costs.
- Swimming & safety: the Arabian Sea can have strong currents and changing waves; always follow lifeguard flags and instructions, avoid going too deep in rough conditions and keep a close eye on children.
- Dress code: on the sand, typical Indian beach modesty applies — swimwear is common but extremely revealing outfits can attract unwanted attention; on the cliff and in town, respect local norms with casual but modest clothing.
- Environment: use bins where available or take your rubbish back up to the cliff; avoid leaving glass bottles or plastic on the sand and respect turtle or wildlife notices if posted.
- Alcohol & behaviour: some restaurants serve alcohol, but public drinking on the sand or loud late night behaviour is frowned on; keep things low key and respectful to other visitors and locals.
Good to know
- Location: Varkala Beach sits below the North Cliff area of Varkala in Kerala, a short auto rickshaw ride from Varkala railway station and reachable by road from Trivandrum and Kollam.
- Seasons: peak season runs roughly from November to February with drier, cooler weather and calmer seas; the monsoon brings heavier rain, rougher waves and some seasonal closures of cafés or beach facilities.
- Services: ATMs, pharmacies, small supermarkets, yoga schools and multiple cafés line the cliff; most visitor needs can be handled within a short walk of the main beach steps.
- Alternatives: quieter stretches of sand lie further south and north of the main stairway if you walk along the coastline, though they may have fewer lifeguards and facilities — always judge conditions carefully.
- Sun & heat: the Kerala sun can be very strong; use high SPF sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water, and avoid long unprotected exposure in the middle of the day.
Why this is worth it
Budget 0 INR for entry and from 200—500 INR per person per day for basics and plan anything from a couple of hours to several lazy days at Varkala Beach — a relaxed Kerala clifftop-and-sand combo where you walk down steps from café lined cliffs to a golden beach, swim when seas are safe and watch the sun set straight into the Arabian Sea.
