Parthenon

Standing on the summit of the Acropolis rock, the Parthenon is the iconic 5th-century BC temple dedicated to Athena Parthenos, with fluted Doric columns and views across all of Athens.

• Timed entry and caps: entry is controlled by timed tickets and overall daily visitor caps for the Acropolis, so advance booking in high season is strongly recommended, especially for morning slots.
• Opening hours: broadly 08:00—20:00 in high summer with slightly shorter hours and an earlier closing time in winter; last entry is typically about 30 minutes before official closing.
• Closures and restrictions: the summit area may close temporarily during extreme heat, high winds or special events. Walking on monument bases, crossing barriers, touching the stonework, smoking and using drones or large tripods are forbidden and can lead to fines.
• Safety: surfaces can be polished and slippery, especially when wet; wear shoes with good grip and take care on steps and edges.

• Location: the Parthenon stands at the highest point of the Acropolis hill above central Athens, a short walk uphill from the Plaka and Makrygianni districts.
• Time needed: allow 30—60 minutes specifically around the Parthenon itself within a 2—3 hour Acropolis visit.
• Best timing: early morning or late afternoon gives softer light on the marble, better temperatures and slightly thinner crowds than the late-morning peak.
• Pairing with the museum: the best way to understand the Parthenon sculptures is to combine the hill visit with the Acropolis Museum either earlier the same day or on a neighbouring day.
