Highlights
A self-guided walking visit through Bern's Old City (Altstadt), using public streets, squares, bridges and arcades — there is no entry fee to be in the historic centre itself.
About this experience
The Old City of Bern is Switzerland's federal capital in storybook form — a long, narrow ridge of arcaded streets wrapped by a loop of the Aare River, with sandstone façades, clocktowers, fountains and parliament buildings all packed into a compact, walkable centre. The whole historic core is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the easiest places in Switzerland to explore on foot in a few hours while still feeling like a real, lived-in city rather than a museum.
What's included
- A self-guided walking visit through Bern's Old City (Altstadt), using public streets, squares, bridges and arcades — there is no entry fee to be in the historic centre itself.
- Time to see key landmarks from the outside such as the Zytglogge clock tower, Bundeshaus (Federal Palace), Käfigturm, Bern Cathedral (Münster), Kornhausplatz, Kramgasse and the Aare riverfront viewpoints.
- Freedom to duck under the long covered arcades for window-shopping, cafés and chocolate shops, and to look at the many 16th-century fountains topped with colourful figures.
- Optional add-ons you can decide and pay for on the spot, such as climbing the Bern Cathedral tower for city-and-Alps views or joining a guided walking tour if you want deeper historical commentary.
- NOT included: any paid guided tour, cathedral tower admission, museum tickets (e.g. Einstein House, Einstein Museum, Paul Klee Center), food and drinks, local transport tickets or hotel pick-up.
Who it's for
- Ideal for first-time visitors who want to understand why Bern is the capital and what makes its Old City distinctive compared with Zurich, Geneva or Lucerne.
- Great for couples, solo travellers, families and small groups who enjoy relaxed urban walking, architecture, riverside views and café stops.
- Suitable for most ages and fitness levels: streets are mostly gently sloping or flat, with plenty of benches and arcades offering shade and shelter; you can skip any steep side paths if you prefer.
- Less suited if you are only interested in high-altitude mountain thrills and have zero interest in cities, or if cobblestones and mild slopes are a serious problem for your mobility.
What you'll do
- Arrive at Bern main station and walk straight out into the modern side of town before slipping under the arcades of Spitalgasse and Marktgasse, heading towards the Old City ridge.
- Follow the main spine of the Old Town along Marktgasse and Kramgasse, passing medieval fountains, arcade-lined shops and the distinctive sandstone façades that give Bern its muted, unified look.
- Stop at the Zytglogge (Clock Tower) to see the famous astronomical clock and moving figures; time your visit around the top of the hour if you want to watch the clock's short performance.
- Continue along Kramgasse, spotting the house where Einstein once lived (if you want, you can detour inside, for a separate fee) and pausing to look down side lanes towards the green loop of the Aare River.
- Walk out to one of the bridges or river viewpoints — for example Nydeggbrücke near the lower end of the Old Town — to get wide views back to the Old City skyline, then turn back uphill into the core.
- Head to Bern Cathedral (Münster) and the terrace (Münsterplattform) behind it, where you can look out over the Aare and, on clear days, to the distant Alps; if you feel like it, pay to climb the cathedral tower for even higher views.
- Cross to the Bundesplatz area at the other end of the ridge to see the Federal Palace (Bundeshaus), where Switzerland's parliament meets, and watch kids play in the fountain jets when they're running in warmer months.
- Spend extra time dipping in and out of arcades for coffee, cake, chocolate or small boutiques before looping back towards the station at your own pace.
Before you go
- Tickets / price (starts from): walking through the Old City itself is free — there is no entrance fee. Realistically, budget around 20—40 CHF per person for a coffee, snack or simple meal and possibly a paid attraction like the cathedral tower if you choose.
- Duration: plan about 2—3 hours for an unhurried loop through the main Old City streets and viewpoints, more if you add museums, a cathedral tower climb or a long lunch.
- Clothing & footwear: wear comfortable shoes suitable for cobblestones and mild slopes; in summer bring sun protection and light layers, in cooler months a warm jacket and possibly umbrella or raincoat.
- Behaviour: be mindful that this is a working city as well as a heritage site — avoid blocking narrow arcades, keep noise down late in the evening and respect any signs around government buildings and churches.
- Accessibility: many main streets are relatively smooth and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, but some side lanes and river paths are steeper or cobbled; plan your route accordingly if step-free access is important.
Good to know
- Location: Bern's Old City sits on a narrow ridge almost completely encircled by the Aare River; the walk from the main station into the heart of the Old Town is only a few minutes.
- Orientation: the main axial streets (Spitalgasse—Marktgasse—Kramgasse—Gerechtigkeitsgasse) run along the length of the ridge; once you understand this spine, it is easy to explore side alleys and always find your way back.
- Weather: arcades along much of the route provide shelter from rain and strong sun, making Bern's Old City a good all-weather destination compared with many fully open-air sights.
- Photo tips: for the best classic skyline shots, use bridges and riverbank viewpoints around Nydeggbrücke and Kirchenfeldbrücke; for atmospheric street photos, head out early morning or later evening when crowds thin.
- Extras: you can easily combine the Old City walk with a quick tram or stroll up to the Rose Garden (Rosengarten) above the Aare for a panorama, or with visits to the Bear Park, Einstein Museum or Paul Klee Center on the city's edges.
Why this is worth it
Budget around 20—40 CHF per adult (mainly for food and optional extras) and 2—3 easy hours for the Old City of Bern — a UNESCO-listed ridge of arcaded streets and sandstone houses caught in a loop of the Aare, where you wander past clocktowers, fountains and parliament buildings at a relaxed pace rather than buying a formal “ticketed” attraction.
