Highlights
Funicular railway access based on your ticket type (Normal Lane or Express Lane; one-way or return).
About this experience
Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera) is the classic Penang “go up for cooler air + big views” move. The main experience is taking the Penang Hill Funicular Railway up to the Upper Station, then roaming the hilltop area at your own pace—viewpoints, short walks, and whatever attractions you decide to add on top (each with its own ticketing). The funicular runs daily with clear last-trip cutoffs, so your whole plan is basically: pick your lane (Normal vs Express), go up, explore, and don’t miss the last down.
What's included
- Funicular railway access based on your ticket type (Normal Lane or Express Lane; one-way or return).
- Transport to/from the hilltop via the official funicular service (self-guided visit—explore on your own).
- NOT included: food/drinks, transport to the Lower Station, and any paid attractions at the top (tickets separate).
Who it's for
- Perfect for first-timers who want Penang’s best panoramic views without hiking.
- Great for families/couples/groups—choose a chill pace or a packed itinerary.
- Less ideal if you hate queues: Normal Lane can queue; Express Lane is the “pay to skip the pain” option.
What you'll do
- Buy/scan your ticket at the Lower Station and board the funicular.
- Ride up, then walk around the Upper Station area and nearby viewpoints/paths.
- Head down before the last trips (see timings below).
Before you go
- Tickets / price (starts from, official):
- Standard (non-MyKad) Adult return (Normal Lane): RM30
- Standard Adult return (Express Lane): RM80
- Standard Child (4—12) return (Normal Lane): RM15
- Local/eligible IDs have cheaper MyKad/MyKid/MM2H/i-Kad rates (e.g., Adult return Normal Lane RM16).
- Funicular operating hours (official): 6:30 AM — 11:00 PM (daily).
- Last trip up (Lower → Upper): 10:00 PM
- Last trip down (Upper → Lower): 11:00 PM
- Service runs every 30 minutes, with extra trips if needed.
- Ticket counters (official): 6:15 AM — 9:45 PM.
- Scheduled maintenance (official, very relevant): the funicular will be closed 12—18 Jan 2026 and resumes 19 Jan 2026.
Good to know
- If you’re visiting in mid-Jan 2026: plan around the 12—18 Jan closure (hike/jeep alternatives exist during maintenance, but the funicular won’t run).
- Best timing: go up late afternoon for cooler weather and stay into evening—just respect the 10 PM last-up cutoff.
Why this is worth it
Buy a funicular ticket (Standard Adult return Normal Lane starts RM30), ride up, roam the hilltop, and don’t miss the last rides—plus note the official 12—18 Jan 2026 maintenance shutdown.
