English Garden (Englischer Garten)

Highlights

Free entry to the English Garden's paths, lawns, riverside meadows and viewpoints, including landmarks like the Monopteros hilltop temple, the Chinese Tower area and Kleinhesseloher See lake.

About this experience

Munich's English Garden (Englischer Garten) is a 375-hectare strip of lawns, woods and streams stretching from the city centre to the north — one of the world's largest inner-city parks, bigger than New York's Central Park, and free to enter all year round.

What's included

  • Free entry to the English Garden's paths, lawns, riverside meadows and viewpoints, including landmarks like the Monopteros hilltop temple, the Chinese Tower area and Kleinhesseloher See lake.
  • Use of signposted walking, jogging and cycling paths in both the lively southern section and the quieter, more rural Hirschau in the north.
  • Access to several on-site beer gardens and cafés (Chinese Tower, Seehaus on Kleinhesseloher See, Aumeister and others) — food and drink at extra cost.
  • Option to watch river surfers on the Eisbach near Haus der Kunst when conditions allow (as of late 2025 the main Eisbachwelle is under restoration after safety works, so check current status locally).
  • Park facilities such as benches, open lawns for picnics and play areas; public toilets are mainly near restaurants and beer gardens.

Who it's for

  • Ideal if you want a flexible, low-cost break between Munich's big sights — from solo walkers and runners to couples, groups of friends and families with kids.
  • Great for visitors who enjoy casual cycling, picnics and beer gardens rather than a formal guided museum visit.
  • Largely step-free on main routes, so suitable for many wheelchair users and prams; some side paths are gravel, sloping or uneven.
  • Dog-friendly, with dogs generally allowed but expected to be on-leash in busy zones and wherever local signs require it.

What you'll do

  • Arrive by U-Bahn (for example U3/U6 to Universität or Giselastraße, or U3/U6/U4/U5 to Odeonsplatz) and walk a few minutes into the park.
  • Wander around the southern meadows and Monopteros for city views and people-watching, or head north into the quieter Hirschau meadows if you prefer calm and more nature.
  • Stop at the Chinese Tower beer garden or the lakeside Seehaus on Kleinhesseloher See for a drink and Bavarian food, or rent a pedal boat / rowboat on the lake in season.
  • Follow paths along streams like the Eisbach and the Isar-side meadows, pausing to watch (if operating) the Eisbach surfers near Haus der Kunst or simply stretch out on the grass.
  • Make your way back towards the old town or nearest U-Bahn stop on foot or by bike, depending how deep into the park you've gone.

Before you go

  • Tickets / price (starts from): entry to the English Garden itself is free, 24 hours a day, all year round; your only mandatory spend is whatever you choose to buy in beer gardens, restaurants or boat rentals.
  • Opening hours: the park is open all year and effectively accessible at all times; individual venues (beer gardens, cafés, boat rental, kiosks) keep their own seasonal opening hours.
  • Safety: swimming in the Eisbach and Isar channels is officially restricted and can be dangerous because of cold water, strong currents and hidden obstacles — only enter the water where it is clearly permitted and never near the Eisbach wave zone.
  • Surfing: the main Eisbachwelle has been intermittently closed and is currently being technically restored after safety-related works; when open again it is for experienced surfers only, with helmets, leashes and an accompanying person strongly recommended.
  • Conduct: follow local 'no barbecue' / 'no open fire' rules, keep glass away from the water, dispose of rubbish in bins and keep noise low late at night. In designated nude-sunbathing areas such as parts of Schönfeldwiese, nudity is tolerated but should stay within signed zones.

Good to know

  • Size & feel: at around 375 hectares / 3.7 km², the English Garden is one of the world's largest inner-city parks, bigger than Central Park, so you'll only see a slice on a short visit.
  • Time needed: plan 1.5—4 hours for a relaxed circuit taking in the Chinese Tower, Monopteros and Kleinhesseloher See — longer if you stop for a long beer-garden meal or boat rental.
  • Best timing: on sunny weekends the southern lawns can feel like a festival; for quieter vibes aim for early morning, late evening or the more rural Hirschau section in the north.
  • Weather: in summer the shade and riverside breezes make this a classic escape from city heat; in autumn it's all about foliage and misty mornings, while in winter paths can be icy and lakes may freeze.
  • Getting there: easy U-Bahn access from central stops like Marienplatz via U3/U6 to Universität or Giselastraße, or via Odeonsplatz, plus multiple tram, bus and bike-route connections.

Why this is worth it

Plan a free, flexible 1.5—4 hour window to wander Munich's English Garden — a huge inner-city park of lawns, streams, beer gardens and lakes running straight out of the old town — grabbing a drink at the Chinese Tower or Seehaus and, when operating, checking out the Eisbach surfers near Haus der Kunst on your way.
