Senso-ji Temple

Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple in Asakusa, dedicated to Kannon and famous for its Kaminarimon “Thunder Gate”, Nakamise shopping street, five-story pagoda and main hall. One of Japan’s most-visited spiritual sites, drawing tens of millions of visitors each year. Plan around 1—2 hours, more if you shop and snack on Nakamise-dori.

• Access to Nakamise-dori shopping street leading from Kaminarimon Gate to the inner Hozomon Gate (shops paid separately).

• Exit Asakusa Station and walk to the huge red Kaminarimon Gate with its giant lantern.
• Stroll along Nakamise-dori, browsing traditional snack stalls and souvenir shops.
• Pass through Hozomon Gate to reach the main hall and five-story pagoda.
• Purify at the water basin, explore the main hall, and try your luck with omikuji (paper fortunes) if you like.
• Wander the side streets and small shrines around the complex or return via Nakamise-dori.

• Tickets/Entry: admission to the temple grounds and main hall is free; donations are optional.
• Hours: temple grounds are open 24 hours; the main hall typically opens from about 06:00 to 17:00 (from around 06:30 to 17:00 in the cooler months).
• Expect crowds during weekends, holidays and festivals like Sanja Matsuri; be respectful of worshippers at all times.

• Location: Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo, Japan (short walk from Asakusa Station).
• Best time: early morning or later afternoon/evening for softer light and fewer tour groups; the grounds are especially atmospheric when lanterns are lit after dark.
• Surroundings: easy to combine with a Sumida River cruise, Tokyo Skytree views or a walk through Asakusa’s old-style backstreets.
