Giant Panda Breeding Research Base (Xiongmao Jidi)

Chengdu’s must-do panda stop: the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (Xiongmao Jidi) is a conservation and breeding centre on the edge of the city, home to dozens of giant pandas plus red pandas in a semi-wild bamboo park setting. Expect nursery enclosures, adult habitats, a panda museum and long leafy paths. You go in the morning for peak panda chaos (eating, climbing, wrestling), then things get lazier as the day heats up. Plan 3—4 hours on site.

• Entry to the main Chengdu Panda Base scenic area with access to outdoor panda enclosures, nursery viewing areas when open, red panda zones, walking paths and lakes.
• Access to supporting facilities such as the Chengdu Giant Panda Museum, Panda Story House and indoor exhibition spaces when operating.
• Basic visitor services: toilets, information points, simple cafés/snack stalls and souvenir shops around the main routes.

• All ages; perfect for families, animal lovers and anyone in Chengdu for even a day or two.
• Paths are mostly paved with gentle slopes, but there are hills and some longer walks between enclosures; strollers are fine, wheelchairs manageable with a push.
• Not ideal if you hate crowds and tour groups — mornings in particular are VERY popular and it can feel packed around the nursery and main adult enclosures.

• Travel out to the base in northeast Chengdu (about 10—13 km from downtown), most commonly by Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station then shuttle bus or taxi to the South Gate.
• Enter with your real-name ticket/ID check, then follow the internal map up through giant panda enclosures, nursery viewing rooms (when open) and red panda walks.
• Spend the morning watching pandas eat bamboo, climb, play and then slowly pass out; drop into the museum/exhibits if you want more science and history.
• Grab snacks or lunch at one of the on-site cafés, loop back via lakes and quieter paths, then exit and ride the shuttle/metro or taxi back into the city.

You must book either a morning or afternoon slot and enter within that window.

• Tickets / price: as of 2024—2025, the official adult ticket is CNY 55 per person (ages 18—59). Students with valid student ID pay CNY 27, and seniors 60+ and children 6 and under/under 1.3 m enter free. All tickets are real-name and valid only for one entry in the booked time slot on the visit date.
• Opening hours & time slots: the base uses split admission windows:
• Mar—Oct: Morning 07:30—12:00, Afternoon 12:00—17:00, park closes around 18:00.
• Nov—Feb: Morning 08:00—12:00, Afternoon 12:00—16:30, park closes around 17:30.
• Booking: online real-name reservation is mandatory for most visitors via the official channels (WeChat Mini Program, official site or authorised apps). Tickets can be reserved up to 14 days in advance; when the daily quota is sold out, no more entries are allowed.
• Expect security checks at the gate; drones, loud speakers, feeding animals and entering restricted areas are forbidden. Follow staff instructions around nursery areas, where viewing times can be limited or temporarily closed.

• Location: No. 1375, Panda Avenue, Chenghua District, Chengdu, roughly 10—18 km from central Chengdu depending on where you stay.
• Best timing: be inside as close to opening as possible (especially Mar—Oct) to catch pandas at their most active during morning feeding; by late morning/early afternoon most will be napping.
• Getting there: the typical DIY route is Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue (熊猫大道) Station, Exit A, then shuttle bus 408 or a short taxi ride to the South Gate. Taxis/ride-hailing from downtown also work fine if you want door-to-door.
• Plan for walking: the site is spread out with multiple loops; wear comfortable shoes, bring water and be ready for humid summers or chilly winters.
• Photos: flash is not allowed in indoor/close-range areas; respect barriers and don’t knock on glass or shout at the animals.

Budget CNY 55 for an adult ticket, book a morning slot, ride Metro Line 3 + shuttle or a taxi out to Panda Avenue, then spend 3—4 hours wandering leafy paths between giant panda and red panda enclosures, with peak cuteness before lunch and nap-time vibes after.
