Arashiyama

A scenic district on the western edge of Kyoto, wrapped around the Katsura River with mountains behind it. Arashiyama is famous for its bamboo grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, riverside walks, temples and seasonal cherry blossoms and autumn colours. Treat it as a half-day to full-day neighbourhood rather than a single “sight”.

• Free access to Arashiyama’s streets, riverbank paths and the main bamboo grove (Sagano Bamboo Forest), which is a public road and does not charge admission.
• Views of Togetsukyo Bridge, the Katsura (Oi) River and the surrounding hills.
• Easy walking access to multiple paid attractions such as Tenryu-ji Temple, Okochi Sanso Villa, Iwatayama Monkey Park and boat tours on the river (each with their own fees).

• All ages: couples, families, solo travellers and photographers.
• Great for people who like wandering districts, taking photos and mixing nature with temples instead of just ticking one building.
• Most core areas are walkable with some slopes and stairs; some viewpoints and the monkey park require more uphill walking.

• Ride out from central Kyoto (JR, Hankyu or Randen lines) and walk towards Arashiyama’s main streets.
• Cross or view the 155 m-long Togetsukyo Bridge, the district’s landmark spanning the Katsura River with classic views of the hills behind.
• Wander through the Sagano/Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, a free 24-hour path through tall bamboo that has become one of Kyoto’s most photographed walks.
• Detour into paid spots if you want: Tenryu-ji Temple and its garden (separate entry fee), Okochi Sanso Villa, or Iwatayama Monkey Park above the river.
• Snack and shop along the small streets, then loop back via the riverbank or bamboo for a different light.

• Tickets / Entry: the Arashiyama district, including the bamboo grove and areas around Togetsukyo Bridge, is free to walk; there is no general admission gate or district fee.
• Individual attractions within Arashiyama charge their own fees (for example, Tenryu-ji’s garden and hall, Okochi Sanso, boat rides, monkey park), typically in the low hundreds of yen per adult; prices are posted at each site.
• The bamboo grove path is open 24 hours as it is a public road, but lighting is limited at night; visit early morning or in daylight if you want clear photos and easier footing.
• Expect heavy crowds during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons; follow signage and local guidance, especially around traffic and event nights.

• Location: Arashiyama district in western Kyoto, centred around the Katsura River and Togetsukyo Bridge, reachable from Kyoto Station in about 15—30 minutes depending on train line.
• Best strategy: arrive early (before 9:00) to walk the bamboo grove before the big tour crowds, then do temples, lunch and river time; or stay later for softer afternoon light on the bridge and hills.
• The area is very seasonal: cherry blossoms around the river and hills in spring, thick greens in summer and strong red/orange foliage on the slopes in autumn. Nightlight events sometimes illuminate parts of the district in certain periods.

Arashiyama itself is free: you pay only for optional temples, villas, monkeys and boats. Come early, walk the bamboo grove and riverside, cross Togetsukyo, then add a couple of paid spots if you want to turn it into a full Kyoto highlight day.
