West Lake (Xi Hu)

Hangzhou’s signature sight and a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape, West Lake (Xi Hu) is a 5.6 km² freshwater lake framed by low hills, pagodas, causeways and classical gardens. The shoreline runs roughly 15 km, with the classic layout often summarised as “one hill, two pagodas, three islands, three causeways and five lakes”. It is a free, open scenic area at the heart of the city, best explored on foot, by bike or by boat. Plan anywhere from a relaxed half-day to a full day around the lake.

• Free access to the general West Lake scenic area: lakeside promenades, causeways (like Su and Bai Causeways), public parks, viewpoints and most paths around the water.
• Views of famous scenes such as Broken Bridge, Three Pools Mirroring the Moon island, Leifeng Pagoda and Baochu Pagoda on the surrounding hills.
• Option to pay extra for boat cruises, entry to individual pagodas/temples, or the Impression West Lake night show, depending on what you choose to do.

• All ages: couples, families, solo travellers and friend groups who want classic “China postcard” scenery without a hard hike.
• Great if you enjoy walking, photography and slow exploring; paths are mostly flat and paved, with plenty of benches and viewpoints.
• Not ideal if you only enjoy tightly packaged indoor attractions — West Lake is about open air, strolling and atmosphere more than a single building or museum.

• Arrive in central Hangzhou and walk or take a short taxi/metro ride to one of the lakeside areas (for example near Broken Bridge, Lakeside Park or Hubin Road).
• Follow the waterfront paths or causeways, stopping at viewpoints, small gardens and pavilions as you go; rent a bike if you want to cover more distance around the 15 km loop.
• Take a public boat cruise if you want to get out onto the water, with many routes circling the lake or stopping at Three Pools Mirroring the Moon island.
• Combine the lake with one or two nearby paid sights such as Leifeng Pagoda or a tea village in the hills, then return in the evening for lit-up skyline and reflections if the weather is clear.

• Tickets / price (starts from): the general West Lake scenic area is free to enter; there is no base admission for walking or cycling along the lake. You only pay for optional extras like:
• Public boat tours, which usually run from around CNY 50—70 per adult for standard daytime lake cruises, with some cheaper or more expensive options depending on boat type and route.
• Individual scenic spots such as Leifeng Pagoda or combination tickets that bundle several paid attractions on and around the lake.
• Hours: West Lake’s lakeside paths are generally accessible all day, making early-morning and evening visits possible. Specific paid attractions (pagodas, museums, shows and boat wharves) keep their own operating hours, so you need to time those within their daily schedules.
• Safety and conduct: normal city-park rules apply — keep to marked paths, supervise children near the water, respect quiet zones near temples and follow crew instructions on boats (lifejackets, boarding queues, weather suspensions).

• Location: Xihu District in central Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province; the lake sits directly west of the historic city centre and is easy to reach by metro, bus or taxi.
• Scale and layout: the water area is about 5.6 km², roughly 3.3 km north—south and 2.8 km east—west, divided by causeways and Gushan Island into several connected “lakes” with different views.
• Best timing: spring and autumn are prime for mild weather and blossom or foliage; early morning offers local life and softer light, while late afternoon to sunset gives dramatic reflections and, on clear nights, city lights.
• Extras: the West Lake Museum is free, and the famous Impression West Lake show (paid) uses the lake itself as a stage backdrop on selected evenings.

West Lake itself costs CNY 0 to wander: stroll or cycle the lakeside paths, add a paid boat ride or pagoda visit if you like, and treat it as Hangzhou’s big open-air living room with classic “ink-painting” views all around.
