Topkapı Palace

The former seat of the Ottoman sultans: a walled hilltop complex above the Bosphorus with four main courtyards, pavilions, treasury, kitchens and the famous Harem. For nearly 400 years this was the administrative and ceremonial heart of the empire; today it is one of Istanbul’s biggest museum sites. Plan at least 3—4 hours if you are doing the full ticket with Harem.

• Hours: generally open from 09:00 to around 18:00, with last admission roughly 1 hour before closing. The palace is usually closed on Tuesdays and may close on the first day of certain religious holidays.
• Istanbul Museum Pass is valid for the main palace museum; the Harem and some sections can have separate rules, so check details when buying.
• Security screening is in place, and large bags, tripods and professional rigs may be restricted. Some rooms can be temporarily closed for conservation.
