Charles Bridge is Prague’s most iconic river crossing — the historic stone bridge over the Vltava that links Old Town and Lesser Town. The bridge replaced the earlier Judith Bridge (damaged by floods), with construction starting in 1357 under Charles IV and finishing in 1402. It was originally called the Stone Bridge/Prague Bridge, and since 1870 it has been known as Charles Bridge. It’s built from sandstone blocks and is flanked by fortified bridge towers on both ends.
