Monastery (Al Dayr / Ad-Deir), Petra — 800-Step Hike to Massive Rock-Cut Facade + Viewpoint (Included with Petra Ticket)
Highlights
Access to the Monastery area as part of Petra Archaeological Park entry (self-guided).
About this experience
The Monastery (Al Dayr / Ad-Deir) is one of Petra’s most impressive monuments — a huge rock-cut facade sitting high above the main city trails. The classic approach starts near Qasr al-Bint and climbs roughly 800 steps over about 1.6 km to reach the Monastery plateau. The monument got its “Monastery” name because the interior hall was later reused as a Christian chapel and crosses were carved into the rear wall.
What's included
- Access to the Monastery area as part of Petra Archaeological Park entry (self-guided).
Who it's for
- Perfect for: hikers, photographers, “I want the best Petra viewpoint” people, anyone who’s already doing Petra properly.
- Not ideal if you struggle with stairs/heat — this climb is real.
What you'll do
- Reach the climb near Qasr al-Bint, then hike up the 800-step trail to the Monastery, taking breaks at shaded spots and viewpoints.
- Chill at the top for photos and wide views before heading back down the same way.
Before you go
- Tickets / price: No separate ticket for Al Dayr. It’s inside Petra, so you need a Petra entrance ticket. Petra’s official fees list 50 JOD (1-day accommodated), 55 JOD (2-day), 60 JOD (3-day), and 90 JOD (1-day non-accommodated/day-trip style).
- Fitness/gear: official trail guidance recommends sturdy shoes + plenty of water, sun protection, and a hat.
Good to know
- Best time: early morning (cooler + fewer people).
- Time needed: 2—4 hours round-trip depending on pace + photo stops (longer if it’s hot).
Why this is worth it
Petra’s big flex after the Treasury: climb ~800 steps to Al Dayr for massive scale + epic views. Included in Petra ticket — bring water and don’t underestimate the stairs.
